This multi-day project involved restoring the exteriors of two large distribution units in Northampton (NN4), located immediately adjacent to the M1. The buildings, built around 2022, had never been cleaned, resulting in glazing dulled by original construction film and severe hydrocarbon buildup from motorway exhaust.
The task was compounded by a massive infestation of spiders creating dense silk webbing in all corners. The service was executed during an extreme summer heatwave (reaching 33°C), presenting technical challenges as the reflective glazing bounced intense heat back onto the operators.
Despite site management refusing access to on-site scissor lifts for difficult high corners, our team utilized high-modulus carbon poles and extended goosenecks to achieve a near-perfect finish, transforming soot-covered glass into mirror-reflective surfaces.

Situated just 50 meters from the M1 motorway, these 3-year-old logistics units suffered severe atmospheric deposition. The glazing was occluded by baked-on construction residue compounded by heavy hydrocarbon (diesel) soiling from traffic, alongside extensive spider nesting in window reveals.
The Protocol
We utilized 0000 PPM ionized Pure Water delivered via high-modulus 3K carbon fibre poles (Phoenix by Facelift) to handle the extensive bays. Working during a 33°C heatwave required intense physical management due to heat reflecting off the glass. As site management denied access to MEWPs for high corners, we relied on extended gooseneck techniques and high-reach pole skills to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Technical Explanation
The location poses a unique geological challenge: continuous exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) from the M1 transport corridor. This soot bonds with construction silicates on unmaintained glass. Furthermore, cleaning highly reflective modern units in 30°C+ temperatures creates a "solar feedback loop," significantly increasing thermal stress on operators and requiring rapid pure water rinsing to prevent flash-drying marks.
To combat the heat, we increased the flow rate of our pure water systems to cool the glass surface before cleaning. We employed "3k Wrap" High Modulus poles for their zero-flex characteristic, allowing us to scrub the frame corners aggressively. We worked in reduced section sizes (1-2 windows at a time) to ensure the rinse cycle was completed before the sun could evaporate the water, preventing calcium spotting.
