Thanks to the kindness of one incredible person we now have a replacement van — but it's an empty shell, and we have to rebuild the tools of our trade from scratch to get back to work. More than a clean: Science of protecting what you own
For 25+ years, I've run Shining Windows across Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes, and Bedford. Somewhere along the way, through decades of sweat and sheer determination, it stopped being just "window cleaning" and became something I am genuinely obsessed with: the science of the built environment. We do not view property maintenance as a simple cosmetic chore. We practice Forensic Asset Stewardship.
Most of the trade treats a building as an inert object or backdrop, relying on a race to the bottom with aggressive, high-pressure chemical washes that fracture substrates just to look good for a single season. We exist to disrupt this dangerous false economy. I work the opposite way. The built environment is a hyper-complex, living, thermodynamic thing, locked in a slow, constant, invisible battle with weather, chemistry, biological colonisation, and entropy itself.
My work is built on two disciplines I've spent years developing: Applied Environmental Stewardship Sciences (the how—diagnosing the biological load and using exact, zero-residue methods) and Anthrotectonic Hylodynamics (the why—how architecture, materials, atmosphere, and living organisms interact over time). By neutralising biological decay and engineering thermodynamic resilience, we eliminate premature structural replacement costs and mathematically secure the absolute longevity of your assets.
Why does that matter beyond a clean window? Because it is fundamentally about the circular economy and carbon. Traditional construction and maintenance run on a destructive, linear "take-make-dispose" model. Every façade, render, and seal that decays prematurely gets torn out and replaced—and the embodied carbon in that replacement is enormous. Maintaining the fabric properly, with science instead of guesswork, keeps materials in service for longer, prevents needless replacement, and drastically cuts the whole-life carbon footprint of the buildings around us. It protects the customer's asset, preserves capital, and does right by the environment.
That's the business we've built, and it's the business we are fighting with everything we have to get back on the road. In a hard economy, when you have a family to feed, my drive to keep working, keep learning, and keep protecting these communities has never been stronger. That is why I am also pushing myself uphill, studying building and computer science with the Open University starting this October. We don't just clean buildings. We look after them, and we elevate the health of our communities.
I won't dress up where this has left us. We have had to turn to food banks. Our local community has quietly carried us — helping with the school runs, and putting supermarket vouchers in our hands so we could shop online and keep food in for our two girls. That is the honest reality behind this page: a family that has always worked for everything, now leaning on the kindness of others just to get through the week.
After months of that, one incredible person gave us a replacement van — but a bare van is not a business. Everything that made it earn a living — the poles, pumps, hoses, reels, the baffled water tank, and years of carefully bought and maintained kit — is the very equipment being withheld from us. We are, quite literally, starting again from nothing, rebuilding a toolkit that took us years and years to assemble, piece by piece.
So we sat down and priced up exactly what it takes to get back on the road. So far, that comes to £3,271.64 — and every figure below is at trade price: the real, professional cost of the equipment, not a marked-up retail wish-list. We don't get to shop around for a cheaper way out of this, or choose a smaller bill. This is simply what the tools of our trade cost to replace. It is what it is, and here we are — so here's the list, in full and in the open.
The remaining funds will cover the professional fitting and installation the van needs to work safely: bolting the water-tank frame through the vehicle floor, wiring a split-charge relay and secondary battery into the electrical system to run the pump all day, and securing the rest of the equipment in place. This is skilled, safety-critical work — carrying water weight and adding electrics to a vehicle — so it will be carried out by qualified professionals, not bodged to save a few pounds. Every penny is going into doing this properly, once and right.

Here's why we are having to rebuild from nothing. Since May, our primary work van and all of our specialised trade equipment have been unlawfully retained and stolen from us in a dispute with a rogue garage. While the case is live, I won't name them, or share court numbers or personal names—but I can tell you honestly what happened to us, because anyone who works hard for a living knows the absolute devastation of having your livelihood ripped away.
A vehicle that went in running did not come back working. We did everything by the book, exactly the right way: we communicated openly again and again, we hired a recovery truck, we attended the premises in person, and we offered to pay any proper, legitimate balance there and then by card or bank transfer. Traceable payment was aggressively refused, the sum demanded was arbitrarily inflated on the spot, and our van—along with thousands of pounds of completely unrelated cleaning equipment locked inside it—was seized and held hostage as leverage.
What we are experiencing is what we believe to be a textbook engine extortion scam—a predatory practice we are sadly learning is infecting the motor trade. It is a pattern where a working vehicle develops a sudden, serious "fault" while in the garage's sole care, and the customer is pressed and held to ransom for a large, arbitrary cash sum. I make no accusation I can't prove—the true cause of our engine failure will be established by independent inspection—but the facts, as they stand, speak for themselves.
We are not fighting this alone, and we are not fighting in the dark. Trading Standards, the police, and specialist police fraud officers are actively involved, monitoring the situation and building a regulatory case in the background. We are actively pursuing a claim through the civil courts.
When the case concludes, we secure our judgement, and the facts are formally established, this story will become wider and highly publishable. We intend to take the entire verified dossier to the national papers and tell the full story openly. We are doing this because the public deserves to know how rogue, predatory operators are held to account and deleted in court and on paper. More importantly, people deserve to see that an ordinary, disabled sole trader refused to be a victim, using the proper legal channels to stand up to toxic coercion and win.
Until the media carries that legal victory, we are surviving day by day, kept going by the kindness of our community, and fighting tooth and nail to get our business back on the road.
