Buckingham

Limestone country. Acid cleaners dissolve it. Window cleaning, soft washing and heritage masonry care across MK18 and MK19.

West of Milton Keynes the ground turns from Oxford Clay to oolitic limestone. Limestone is calcium carbonate, so the acid cleaners sold in every builders' merchant consume the stone rather than clean it. Hard water bonds into glass and etches it. Two failure modes, both chemical, both avoidable.

The canal, the plateau and the new estates

  • The Grand Union Canal through Cosgrove, Old Stratford and Yardley Gobion creates a narrow damp corridor. Canal-side render and stonework stays wet into mid-morning and greens faster than property a few hundred metres away — the same mechanism as the river at Bedford, smaller in scale.

  • The exposed high ground at Hanslope and across the plateau gets weather from every direction and dries fast, which helps, but takes the full load of wind-driven rain on western elevations, which does not.

  • The modern estates — Lace Hill, Windsor Park, Buckingham Park, Linden Village, Badgers, Tudor Meadows — are a different building stock entirely. Monocouche and thin-coat render on blockwork, no limestone problem whatsoever. What they have is Trentepohlia, the orange-rust algal bloom residents almost always report as the render having gone rusty. It is an alga, treated with a low-pressure biocide and never a lance.

Two building stocks, two hundred metres apart, requiring opposite treatments. That is Buckingham.

What it costs

Every service has a published rate. You do not need a consultation call to find out what something costs — the figures are on the online price list, and dates go into the appointment calendar. Heritage and listed work is quoted individually, because the survey comes first and the method follows from what the survey finds. Comparable work is documented in the case studies, findings are published in cleaning news, and for anything listed or in the conservation area, contact the office before booking online.

The other three towns

East of here the ground returns to clay and hydrocarbon traffic film takes over from mineral deposit — see Milton Keynes. North the geology turns to ironstone and the staining becomes rust-coloured, covered under Northampton. East again the Great Ouse raises humidity and biology dominates — Bedford. All four are listed on the region hub, and the practice behind them in about Shining Windows.
