Long before you can see green or black growth, bacteria are already at work — the microscopic first layer of life on damp masonry, gutters and standing water. Some bind grime and feed later colonies; others corrode metal or shelter waterborne organisms in slime. The 'Bc-Codes' catalogue these by surface and risk, because a clean that ignores the invisible layer simply lets everything grow back faster.
The Bc-Codes classify the bacterial colonisers of architectural surfaces — the microbial component of the building biofilm. Bacteria participate across succession: as part of pioneer films, as the EPS-secreting matrix-builders of mature multi-species assemblages, and, on metalliferous fabric, as agents of microbially-influenced (galvanic) corrosion. In water-bearing assets (gutters, hot tubs, pools) pathogenic genera such as Pseudomonas and Legionella exploit the EPS matrix to survive standard halogenation, which is why mature biofilm is treated as a structural defence to be lysed rather than merely rinsed. The Bc-Codes index genera by substrate, moisture and corrosion risk within the COSMOS organism-substrate axis.
