Learned helplessness

Learned Helplessness, in the BEEI context, is the occupant state in which repeated exposure to decay they feel unable to fix produces resignation — 'it's always been like that' — suppressing demand even where the risk is real. Drawing on the established psychological concept (and linked to biophobia in the Psychologia dataset), it explains why some properties are left to deteriorate not from indifference but from a sense of futility. Recognising it lets the Scholar-Technician reframe the problem as solvable and bounded, restoring agency rather than reinforcing the resignation.
